How to keep your brain young

The brain makes us what we are, the primary driver of our thoughts and our actions, and over time becomes a unique archive of personality and experience. But still, the brain is no different from other organs in the physical sense. The cells in the brain age just like any other part of the body, heart or hips.

When it comes to brain aging, we don’t take it as hard as e.g. wrinkles. A mature brain is a desirable thing, says Susan Greenfield, one of the UK’s leading neuro-scientists. The connections between cells in the brain can be constantly renewed through life and become desperate, but the problem arises when those connections stop working.

The most common indication of brain aging is memory loss, and the longer a person lives, the longer their senility becomes more common. However, the brain can be protected and aging processes can be slowed down.

About 20 percent of people carry a gene that significantly increases their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, but for others, the development of the disease depends on how they spend their lives.

Some societies, such as the Mount Athos priest community in Greece, have no recorded cases of senility or stroke at all, and this is attributed to their stress-free and healthy eating lives.

Many processes can contribute to memory loss. The blood vessels in the brain become stiffer, which slows blood flow to the brain and impedes oxygen supply. The second process, although not yet fully investigated, is about the disproportionate accumulation of amyloids in brain cells. Also, there is some evidence that people with Alzheimer’s had a minor stroke throughout their lives, which may not necessarily have been noticed. Sometimes there is a minor blood spill into the brain without the person even noticing the condition.

Although senility occurs most commonly in people over 80, scientists believe the process begins much earlier, in the 1940s. And then it is necessary to start with prevention.

As we age, our system weakens, so we need nutrition to help it. It is important to include in the diet many foods containing antioxidants such as wild fruits, broccoli and all others that contain vitamin C and vitamin E.

Dietary supplements with omega-3 fatty acids rich in fish oil also help because they reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The importance of physical activity should not be underestimated. Not only does obesity go hand in hand with high blood pressure, but there is also evidence that physical activity itself strengthens the brain as more blood reaches it in those moments.

But most important of all is to exercise the brain itself. The brain is like any other muscle, the more you exercise it, the stronger it will be. You should constantly try yourself in new situations, learn new things, languages, fill in crosswords, play chess. It is important that you choose an activity that you enjoy but that works well. You can write symphonies, write novels, or develop a sense of humor. It is important that you do not leave or entrain your brain.
