Dog at home: how to teach a lone dog to be calm

There is a situation in every dog’s life when he or she has to stay home alone. It depends on our lifestyle whether the house is alone for 9, 10 or more hours each day, or we just leave it for a few minutes sometimes. No matter where or how we live, it is up to the little ones to get used to being alone.

Leaving dogs, ie. separation from the “pack” is not very natural. They prefer to be with us, to have their guide beside them, who cares for them. Temporary ejection from the pack is a way of punishment used by the mother in the litter. Our pets are left with genes that separation can be very dangerous.

Watch your puppy in the park, where there are many people. At an early age, most of them dare not walk more than a few steps from the guide’s feet. It’s not fear or distrust of strangers, it’s just a way to survive. It is safer to be next to the one who nourishes and protects. The owner should take advantage of situations where the puppy pays attention to him and when he arrives without a call, but more on this in the following texts.

The problem arises when the toddler is convinced that it is no good to leave the pack. Because we take a hand to heart, we ask him for a walk. Our requirements change when it’s time to go to work, to the store or to places where the dog can’t go with us. It is always better to “prevent than cure” which is certainly the golden rule of getting used to being alone.

Begin with the exercises the moment the puppy came to the house. Don’t ignore the first signs of ‘solitude syndrome’, such as whimpering, barking, ruining things and the like. As much as you feel like a little snowflake whimpering because you miss it so much, it’s not cute, since an adult dog barks every day while at work, bites a hundred, destroys sockets, tears off the couch and so on. Then it’s not funny to you or your neighbors, and it’s the least funny to the dog. Then it is no longer as important as it is to the environment and how much it costs, but how dangerous it is for the dog.

A lot of dogs, who suffer alone while eating, eat destroyed things, bite the wall, bang on doors and bark until they are completely exhausted. Unfortunately, the treatment of such problems is time-consuming, painstaking and often unsuccessful. So learn a puppy that it is not a bad thing to stay home alone, because you will surely return.

Dogs don’t have a sense of time like we do. They are similar to children who do not yet know what a clock is. Five minutes or all day, it’s all the same. Yesterday was yesterday, and if it may have been a few weeks. Time measures more by what they did. How many times did they eat, sleep, play …

You have probably noticed dogs, which are equally much looking forward to their owners when they return, if they have not been seen for a minute or ten hours. A little cartoonish, but some dogs are happy when you come back from the toilet. You can’t justify your dog to be back in ten minutes. It doesn’t mean anything to him. This is the most important reason that one should never leave a dog when he / she is hungry, when he / she has not performed the emergency and run out. Also make sure you remove all the things that could destroy and are dangerous. If possible, limit the space or close it in a room or hallway. Leave him a toy he can’t bite and swallow. Never give him a bone or the like – instead, buy a toy that puts out food that falls out while the dog is playing. That will entertain him for a while. Prepare him a bowl of fresh water and a blanket or cot for him to sleep on. The puppy cannot suffer for long, so there is an opportunity to enroll while he is waiting for you. Better remove the rugs and stuff.

Dogs like to know what is waiting for them. So think of a ritual you do every time you leave the little one alone. So they will know that you are going somewhere, but more importantly, they will know that you will come back. Adjust your meal time so that you are home for a while after feeding. The house needs to cook a meal, so do not feed it for a few minutes before leaving, as it is more likely that it will carry out an emergency inside. Before leaving, go for a walk, which does not involve fast piss and khaki. Take the time, play, throw the balls, run a little. It will be much easier for a dog if you are away for at least an hour or two instead of leaving him with excess energy. Show him where his place is, give him a toy and tell him to go home and let him wait in peace. It is important that you use the command the dog will teach you to signify your departure and arrival. Don’t make any nervous scenes, don’t caress him too much, just leave.

Floki I’ll be back soon, keep your house nice and play. Totally calm, without the pangs of conscience you leave behind. So peaceful should your arrival be. Do not take the dog out immediately when you enter. Normally go in, anoint him calmly and only after five, ten minutes go outside and play. The dog needs to understand that it’s nice to have come home, but your departure and return is nothing special. It’s just another way of life. Sometimes you are home and sometimes you go. The ritual is not intended to pre-infiltrate the dog, but to calm it down. Take care of all his needs and get the most out of your house.

The dog, which has been taught to stay alone, endures for several hours without any problems. We all know that it is not ideal when the house is full without you all day long but realistically – the work and all other obligations take some time and that cannot be changed. So spend those few hours with him in a quality way. The good side of all is that dogs sleep a lot, and so, trained to be alone, they sleep most of the day.

It is not an accurate story that dogs that are not tied to the owner do not cause problems!

Unfortunately, there is no rule that a dog will tolerate solitude without problems. The character of the dog plays a big role, and even more so his experience.

The exercises are designed to prevent ‘loneliness syndrome’, which can be understood as a phobia. When the dog is whimpering a little to get your attention, it is not yet a disease. However, it can certainly develop into a big problem.

When you have a dog with ‘solitude syndrome’, you no longer ask how to recognize it. Believe me, once you see it, you are absolutely sure. Dogs are at a time when they no longer see you convinced that they will die, that they cannot survive on their own. In them, the urge of the pack is so strong that it escapes when left alone. Unfortunately, this is a very common problem, but owners do not want to talk about it.

If recognized on time, much can be resolved. I remember the owner of a weimaraner, a beautiful bitch, who literally left her apartment every time they left her alone. The owner adjusted the work with her husband so that one worked in the afternoon and the other in the afternoon. The dog was only half an hour alone. But in that half hour, the apartment looked like a tornado had passed over it.

One day she was able to rip the wallpaper off the walls. The scariest thing in the whole story is that the bitch was 4 months old … With a lot of patience they resolved the situation and renovated the apartment.

With exercise, we can prevent a lot, since we will think of situations in which the dog is rewarded when he waits quietly. We will minimize bad experiences. Our behavior in these exercises plays the most important role.

Start with a simple and short workout. Prepare a treat for the dog, tie it (a meter long leash) to the radiator or some heavy piece of furniture and tell him to wait. Take a few steps away. If it stays in place, come back immediately, give it a reward and finish the exercise. If he goes after you and stops calmly – reward him immediately. If the dog tightens its leash but still waits quietly, reward it as well. In case it starts to whine, howl and fuss and you are just a step away from it – you can expect problems. Do not look for excuses or downplay the seriousness of the situation. If possible, seek the help of a specialist now! The younger the dog, the more it can be prevented.

Be aware that the dog does not know what behavior you are asking him to do. So do not pay attention to the dog while he is dragging, snatching, barking, whimpering, jumping and doing all the things that he would not need to do when left alone.

Do not forget that it is not terrible for the dog to be a meter away from you attached to the radiator. Nothing bad can happen to him. Don’t talk to him, don’t look at him, don’t caress him, don’t even think about something bad happening to him. Any reaffirmation of his behavior (which may be the most innocent ‘Well done, don’t lie …’) is confirmation that fear and paranoia are good. And you want to teach your dog to wait nicely and peacefully. Just hold on and wait for the dog to calm down. Do not move, squat, talk on the phone, smoke a cigarette, but be fully focused on the dog but completely calm and relaxed.

Just wait, and the moment the dog calms down, ie. stop barking, whimpering and jumping, go calmly to him, give him a reward, untie him and after a few minutes go out for a walk.

It is important to Grab a moment of composure!

Do not wait for the house to sit still for a full minute, as you will not be welcomed. Take the first moment of calm and show so little that this is what is required of it. Some dogs wait quietly from the start. This wait is not really a real wait because it only takes a second or two, but it is the BASIS for a peaceful life. Do not wait for the prize until the puppy is restored. Take the first moment of calm and reward it. If you take three steps and the kid is calm, turn around, give him a reward, play around and go for a walk.

Those five seconds are a POSITIVE EXPERIENCE, without which a dog cannot learn what you want from it! When it comes to waiting in the apartment, it doesn’t matter if the dog is lying, sitting or standing. She doesn’t even need to pay attention to you. Waiting in the apartment is not the same as sitting, where you move a few steps and the dog must have full attention on you.

Exercise several times a day and gradually extend the time and number of steps. Today you have taken five steps, tomorrow six and so on. Always take advantage of your home’s calm and reward him. Don’t get yourself into a situation where the little one starts barking. When all this is going well and calm, go for heavier exercises.
